Babelsburg is the new album from Welsh singer and Super Furry Animals frontman, Gruff Rhys. It is a genuine pop album that has a distinctly 60’s continental feel to it thanks to Rhys’ deadpan wit and Film Noir approach to songwriting.
Scored by composer Stephen McNeff and recorded with the 72-piece BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the album is rich in texture and social commentary. Rhys’ observations about what he sees happening around him is a cultural indictment without being overly preachy. Instead Rhys prefers to deal in the type of satire and subversive metaphors that will make this a popular album in both shops this week.
